Firstly I have to apologise for my absence lately. Between Happy Feet 2 and my next animation contract on Walking With Dinosaurs I found myself with some time off and decided to work for Club Med Lindeman Island as a G.O.
The only issue while working in the Whitsundays was that our island had no reception whatsoever along with internet and time being hard to come by. I did however get the opportunity to meet and socialise with people from all walks of life, many of which (to my surprise) were also in the TV and film industries. During my time as a G.O on Lindeman island, I strongly realised how much this trip would shape my personality as well as my attitudes towards animation.
Our industry is very much contact driven and you can't harm your chances of finding work by becoming comfortable with speaking to anyone and everyone. This is the most valuable lesson I gained on the island and found myself really coming out of my shell. My responsibilities, as well as socialising with guests, also included putting on shows in the evenings, be it dancing or comedy, which really helped me become more comfortable in my own skin. I can see this greatly aiding my performances and references videos, while giving me the confidence to show and gather opinions on reference work before I am truly comfortable and happy with it.
Books such as Eric Goldberg's 'Character Animation Crash Course', Tony White's 'The Animators Workbook' and of course Richard Williams 'The Animator's Survival Kit' have also kept me in an animation mindset while working in a completely different field.
I feel my time working at Club Med was an extremely valuable experience that has shaped me as a person and an animator. Now to animate on Walking With Dinosaurs is a huge opportunity and I look forward to sharing that work with you. In the meantime expect another Dinosaur test I'm currently working on at home to be put up as well as an updated show reel including my work on Happy Feet 2 and the Dinosaur Test that helped me land my job.
